What is the Problem with the Ford Escape 6F35 Transmission?

The 6F35 transmission is one of a number of automatic transaxles created by Ford and General Motors in the early 2000s for a wide range of vehicles. With each version of the "6-series" applying to different vehicle specifications, Ford has since created the 6F35 to be used with its mid-size vehicles. This has included a number of different models but most notably the transmission was used for nearly a decade of Fusion and Escape vehicles which were sold by the manufacturer. While more than one model of manufactured vehicles can use one transmission may be very cost-effective for automakers, it can become problematic when the performance of that transmission continuously fails due to its design and functionality. The Ford Escape transmission problems that have beset so many current and former owners of the vehicle is a prime example of that very issue.

As we have seen with Nissan transmission problems and in the vehicles of other manufacturers, when a parts system as significant as a transmission becomes too universal, problems can arise. Nissan, as an example, has spent millions  of dollars settling class action cases surrounding its Altima, Sentra, Versa and Versa Note transmission problems, as well as with Rogue and Pathfinders and more. All of these cases, involving millions of vehicles, involve Nissan’s use of the CVT transmission across its lineup for over a decade. This effort to rely upon one transmission across multiple models is just one of the many factors we believe resulted in complicated designs and engineering plans that were not properly tested and corrected before launch. When a vehicle is sold to the public based upon a problematic parts system like the transmission, these problems often persist without a “fix” – but when a manufacturer doesn’t accept accountability, legal action is required.

Mechanical Systems Related to Ford Escape Transmission Problems

Individuals who have owned or currently own an Escape and are facing transmission problems may experience any of the following while driving, or attempting to drive, their vehicle:

  • Shuddering

  • Gear lockout

  • Hesitation

  • Lurching/“bucking” forward at intervals

  • Inability to accelerate

  • Inability to start the vehicle

  • High RPMs as vehicle fails to shift up

  • Error/warning lights at startup

  • And more

Each of these symptoms represent a unique and problematic issue that should be diagnosed and repaired by a mechanic. However, due to the high cost of an inspection, as well as the inconsistent findings of technicians, including those hired by Ford, it can be both expensive and frustrating for owners to have the matter diagnosed or rejected as normal function of the transmission. This not only leads to failures to have the repair performed under warranty but can also result in individuals selling off or otherwise trading a vehicle they feel is unsafe, unreliable and more. The unfortunate truth is that this is not a unique situation to the Escape but rather a larger issue that has been experienced by a wide range of current and former Ford owners.

Escape Transmission Problems Lead to No Response from Ford

Despite widespread complaints regarding the 6F35 used in the Fusion and Escape, Ford has not issued any sort of recall or expanded assistance program aimed to take responsibility in the matter. Instead, like in other instances of transmission problems in their vehicles, the manufacturer has simply ignored the issue and escaped significant legal liability. The very stringent lemon laws in states nationwide often require multiple repairs of a single failing part to qualify for relief, something that does not commonly happen with transmissions. Instead, even if a consumer face repairs every 40,000 miles, it is highly unlikely there is any sort of traditional lemon law relief in states that may, for instance, require two repairs within 24,000 miles or 24 months. With Ford being nationally silent on this issue, that makes claim opportunities like ours even more important for consumers seeking fair compensation for their Escape transmission issue(s).

Ford Transmission Problems Persist Across a Variety of Vehicles

As we continue to help current and former owners with Nissan transmission claims, we also continue to help Ford owners with their own important cases. Unfortunately, the truth is this is not the first time we have helped current and former owners of Ford vehicles with their transmission issues. Our work in helping Focus and Fiesta owners pursue legal claims outside of a problematic class action settlement made national headlines and we learned a wide range of problematic issues related to Ford’s processes in engineering, design and product releases. Those efforts with the Ford DPS6 transmission resulted in us expanding by assisting with Ford Fusion claims, and those efforts continue. What we found in those cases, involving the same 6F35 transmission used in the Escape, now has expanded to help people such as yourself seeking legal options against Ford for these transmission problems.

Our first Fusion transmission lawsuit against Ford for the 6F35 issue is ongoing. As a result, clients of our firm will benefit from the extensive litigation that’s already occurred, but also the extensive discovery and document review our firm has performed in investigating the defect in the 6F35 transmission and the unfortunate overlaps that exist in Fusion transmission issues with persistent Escape transmission problems.
